The Lantern gives special emphasis to the first movement of the emblem: illumination. It carries enough light for something to become visible—but the light is not the conclusion. Once something is seen, the work of differentiation begins.
The blade in the question
Rinzai Zen was an important early influence on the style of inquiry that later appeared in Identity. Its presence is less about importing doctrine than about the discipline of the question. A good question can function like a sword cut: it does not hand the reader an answer; it asks them to cut through an assumption, an identification, or an illusion for themselves.
The katana in the shared IOIM emblem therefore carries both the logic of differentiation and a real lineage of influence in how the work learned to question.
Passage → Encounter → Return
Passage: the Traveler reads, reflects, journals, or maps before the session. The text is not treated as doctrine but as a light carried into a piece of terrain.
Encounter: the coaching session becomes a guided meeting with the material as it appears in the person's actual life.
Return: the Traveler comes back to daily life with an experiment, distinction, journaling prompt, or mapping practice. Over time, a personal atlas forms.
